Football Travels to Rochester this Weekend

RPI Varsity Football (1-2) visits the University of Rochester (3-0), on Saturday at 1:00pm Eastern Time. The game will be Webcast on WRPI in RealAudio format.

Rochester has defeated St. John Fisher, Hobart, and St. Lawrence so far this season. The Yellowjackets are in first place in the UCAA and are looking to put more distance between themselves and the rest of the field.

As Fran Elia writes on d3football.com, "If someone asked me who would be leading the UCAA heading into the final
week of September, I would have blown all of my lifelines and still not
answered Rochester.... Rochester finds out if it’s for real as two-time defending league champion
Rensselaer comes to town on Saturday. The Engineers won last year’s
meeting in Troy 34-6 and is 4-0 versus the Yellowjackets since the series was
renewed in 1996. RPI has outscored Rochester 157-27 during that stretch."

Poly Web Site Comes Back to Life, Better than Ever

The online version of the Rensselaer Polytechnic (aka The Poly, the student newspaper) has been relaunched. The authors of the newly redesigned site say that it "provides more information, contains more pictures, and is easier to navigate". We agree.

We are adding a link to the Poly Web Site to the collection of Quick Links that appears on the right hand side of the RCNJ home page.

The design credit on the Poly Web Site goes to Jason Golieb, a senior from Parsippany, NJ. He is in the EMAC program for his BS degree and also in the 5 year accelerated MBA program at the Lally School of Management and Technology.

The old version of the Poly Web Site had been offline for several months. The message on the Web Page that was left in place of the Web Site during the outage was not specific about the root cause. We presumed that the server had been hacked. However, Jason Golieb set the record straight:

"Our site was not vandalized over the summer. As you probably
know, the Union was getting renovated last year and the process is just finishing
up now. Over the summer, our servers were being moved back into our new/old
offices from West Hall, where we'd been set up during the renovation. Just as the
web server was coming back on line in the Union, it crashed and burned, and we had
to get a new server set up. As soon as the new server was up and running, the new
site debuted."

Liberty Science Center Interns Make Permanent Impact

Ken DeGhetto provided a copy of the letter that he received from Deborah Steiner, Director of Guest Services and Training at the Liberty Science Center. The letter describes the value that the Liberty Science Center and its guests derived from the work done by the Rensselaer interns who worked at the Science Center this summer.

Ms. Steiner writes, "This year's students have left behind projects of great value. Their works range from a prenatal imaging guide, to an exhibit used to teach our guests the skill and dexterity required if one wishes to become a successful surgeon.... Over the years, the internship program has provided a valuable experience for both staff and students. We look forward to this continued relationship...."

The Liberty Science Center Internship Program is one of the largest, longest running, and most successful programs of the Rensselaer Club of New Jersey. This summer, the Internship Program completed its seventh consecutive year of operation.

Mr. Ken DeGhetto

RPI Alumni Committee

1000 The American Road

Morris Plains, NJ 07950

Dear Ken:

I would like to take a moment to thank you and the entire RPI Alumni Committee, along with its many funders, for making another successful summer at Liberty Science Center possible. As you know, the internship program works to everyone's benefit. Not only do the students put their interests and talents to the test, but LSC (and our guests) also reap the benefits of improved activities, new exhibits, and updated background materials.

This year's students have left behind projects of great value. Their works range from a prenatal imaging guide, to an exhibit used to teach our guests the skill and dexterity required if one wishes to become a successful surgeon. Many of the students' projects can now be seen on our exhibit floors, and have already been enjoyed by countless guests.

Over the years, the internship program has provided a valuable experience for both staff and students. We look forward to this continued relationship and are excited to see the fruits of next year's labor.

Once again, on behalf of the Liberty Science Center thank you for your continued support of ths worthwhile program.

Very truly yours,

Deborah Steiner

Director, Guests Services and Training

RPI Breaks the Streak by Burying WPI

Rensselaer destroyed Worcester Tech in football on Saturday. The final score was 45-0. RPI's defense stifled WPI, allowing only 37 yards rushing in 28 attempts.

We found two pretty good articles about the game. Tim Wilkin of the Albany Times-Union wrote an article describing the win that should be read in conjunction with his article from earlier in the week that described the problems that have befallen the team this season.

D3football.com also weighs in with a solid, news-oriented account of the action.

RPI Football Hoping to Break Its Losing Streak Saturday

RPI Varsity Football (0-2) takes on WPI (1-2) at '86 Field, on Saturday at 1:30pm Eastern Time. The game will be Webcast on WRPI in RealAudio format.

Update: Tim Wilkin of the Times-Union wrote a good article documenting the problems that the team has had this season.

The game against WPI is played each year for The Transit Trophy. Many recent graduates of Rensselaer believe that the Transit Trophy game is steeped in tradition. While that may be true of the rivalry between Rensselaer and Worcester Tech, the trophy itself has only been awarded to the winner since 1980.

If you need more information on listening to WRPI over the Internet, check out WRPI's RealAudio FAQ.

In the course of researching this article, we uncovered this small Web Site devoted to RPI sports history. It appears that it may be the work of Kurt Stutt. There is some useful information here that we have not seen elsewhere.

New Jersey Phonathon Raises $30,470

On Monday, $30,470 was raised for Rensselaer at the annual New Jersey Phonathon. To be consistant with our report on the New York City Phonathon, this is the amount raised before any potential corporate match. When corporate match is included, the amount raised jumps to $40,205.

Dave Aiello, co-chairman of the Phonathon said, "Many of you may recall that we raised significantly more than $40,000 in 1999. Undoubtedly, the problem this year was a reduced number of volunteers. We began the process of determining what actions to take in response by brainstorming with our fellow alumni at the Phonathon. We will use this Web Site to communicate Phonathon improvement ideas to the entire Club in the near future."

"I want to thank the people involved in this year's Phonathon. They did an excellent job in spite of the obstacles to success. We are confident that we can do better next year. We welcome any assistance from other RCNJ members, as well as suggestions for how to improve the event."

News.com: Foosball Exploding in USA

dave_aiello wrote, "Everyone I know who has gone to RPI in the last 15 years played some foosball while they were at school. CNET News.com is reporting that foosball is exploding as a form of indoor entertainment. Much of the resurgence is attributed to the availability of foosball in the work environment at high tech companies."

According to the article, "After spending most of the '80s and much of the '90s in relative
obscurity, virtually unknown to anyone unfamiliar with the inside of
low-rent pubs, foosball has staged a stunning comeback. And it
owes its renaissance to faddish Internet companies that have
embraced the game with gusto."

Dave continued: "I know foosball is a big sport at Rensselaer. If you played foosball when you were in school, tell the rest of us what you like or dislike about it. Do you still play? Add a comment by clicking Read more...."

Can you believe that there is an American Foosball Association?

Former RPI Goalie Plays in Pittsburgh-NJ Preseason Game

jpcloninger96 writes, "Former RPI goaltender Joel Laing played in goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night, in a pre-season game between the Penguins and the New Jersey Devils {at Wilkes-Barre, PA}. New Jersey won 5-4."

"Joel let in three goals before being replaced in the middle of the second period. Had it not been for a porous Pittsburgh defense, he most definitely would have had a better night."

John Cloninger continues, "Also on the Penguins pre-season roster is former Harvard goaltender J.R. Prestifilippo."

RPI Loses Shotglass Shocker

D3football.com is reporting that the Coast Guard Academy shocked RPI in football, 24-21. The Bears victory stopped an eight game losing streak and gave them the Shotglass Trophy, a trophy signifying victory in the annual football game between the two schools.

The loss drops Rensselaer to 0-2. This is the first time that RPI has started 0-2 since 1987.

It took a while to find the results of this game. The Times-Union and the Troy Record failed to post stories on the game. We had heard that D3football.com was similar to US College Hockey in terms of its reliable coverage of action at the level of RPI's team, but this is the first time we had looked at it.

Steve Munn Named Captain of Men's Hockey

Today, Sports Information at Rensselaer announced the captains of the men's hockey team for the 2000-2001 season. Steve Munn, a junior from Maymont, Saskatchewan, will be the captain. The assistants will be juniors Andrew McPherson and Matt Murley, and sophomore Danny Eberly.

As hockey players and serious fans alike know, the selection of a team captain and the assistant captains is among the most important steps to forming a team at competitive levels. Captains are not chosen on the basis of scoring ability or popularity with fans. Instead, captains are generally chosen for their leadership abilities.

A couple of us wondered where Maymont is in Saskatchewan. It appears to be near the Battlefords, north west of Saskatoon.

New York City Phonathon Raises Over $85,000

Last night, $85,635 was raised for Rensselaer at the annual New York City Phonathon. This is the amount pledged before any potential corporate match is added.

New York City Phonathon chairman Henry Scheuer '69 thanks alumni from throughout the Tri-State area, including members of the RCNJ and the alumni chapter in Westchester and Rockland Counties, NY, for their hard work. Alumni from other regional chapters are a large part of the New York Phonathon because of the close proximity of the Williams Club to their places of work.

Henry said, "I look forward to seeing many of you at the New Jersey Phonathon next Monday. Hopefully, we can break the New Jersey record again this year, just as we broke the New York City record again last night." For more information on the New Jersey Phonathon, contact Sandeep Nandy or Dave Aiello.

When corporate matching funds are counted, it is estimated that this group of alumni raised just under $100,000 for Rensselaer in a three hour period.

The following alumni who are regional chapter leaders were in attendance at the New York City Phonathon last night:

  • Mike Torre, NYC Chapter President
  • Ray Weisner, NYC Chapter Past President
  • Michael Wellner, Westchester and Rockland Chapter President
  • Dave Aiello, RCNJ President

A complete list of participants will be posted here as soon as we can confirm it.

Gartner Group Study Says Napster Use Permitted at RPI

The Gartner Group, an influential technology market research firm, has published a report about the availability on major college and university campuses across America of a controversial Internet service called Napster.

Napster is a service that allows its users to share files containing music and other types of multimedia with each other. As such, many in the recording industry consider Napster a tool that primarily enables users to avoid paying for music that they would otherwise want to purchase on CD.

According to the Gartner report, 17 of the top 50 universities in America have banned the use of Napster. The remaining 33 universities surveyed, including Rensselaer, have not banned it.

This is a big deal because the Recording Industry Association of America won a judgement against Napster that was supposed to shut down the service. The judgement has been stayed by an appeals court, leaving the Napster service available, but not absolving any participant of potential liability for copyright infringement.

The Industry Standard, a respected Internet industry publication, indicated that Howard King, an attorney for some music groups, is serving notice on many universities that they are aiding and abetting copyright infringement. The article says that he intends to send the letter to a number of other universities, including RPI.

RPI Loses to Plymouth State 24-10

The Times-Union is reporting that Rensselaer lost its home opener to Plymouth State, 24-10. This is RPI's first regular season loss since the 1998 season.

Plymouth State, owners of the best school won-loss record in Division III, never trailed in this game as they were able to keep both turnovers and penalties down.

U.S. News Rates RPI in Top 50 Universities

Update: Click here for information about RPI's performance in the most recent U.S. News and World Report rankings.

According to a recent Rensselaer Press Release, U.S. News and World Report ranked Rensselaer among the nation's top 50 universities. The rankings appear in the September 11 issue, and in an associated publication called "America's Best Colleges".

The Rensselaer Press Release contains some links to other articles on the U.S. News Web Site that were truly interesting. Among them is a U.S. News story about Frank McDermott, a recent Rensselaer graduate who founded Officetravel.com.

President Jackson to Lead Campus Town Meeting Sept 7

Campus.News is reporting that President Jackson will lead a Campus Town Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 7 to "discuss the achievements of the last year and to introduce the first-year priorities of the Rensselaer Plan." According to the main page of the RPI Web Site, the event will be Webcast from 3:00 to 6:00pm Eastern Time.

According to information about the Webcast, it will be served for Windows Media Player only. It is not clear if the stream will be saved for later viewing. (Update on 09/08: The page from which the Webcast could be accessed simply says "Broadcast Complete". This must mean they are not archiving the meeting.)

Rensselaer Rolls Out Campus.News

We noticed that the Review, RPI's old weekly campus news publication that was like the faculty / staff equivalent of the The Poly, has been replaced by a Web-based publication called Campus.News. It's home page calls it "a convenient online summary of the latest Rensselaer news. It is posted weekly on Mondays or whenever breaking news warrants."

Young America's Foundation Exposes 12 "Absurd" College Courses

The Washington Times is reporting about a forthcoming report on the "most ridiculous college courses" produced by Young America's Foundation. The article reveals the so-called Dirty Dozen: the twelve courses from colleges across America that they consider the most egregious wastes of time and money.

One aspect of the report worth investigating is how many of the courses deemed absurd by the study are found at RPI and technological universities like it? Parents with college-bound children need to think carefully about issues like this. Won't your money be better spent by sending your son or daughter to Rensselaer?

The YAF is a conservative political organization dedicated to promoting the ideas of "individual freedom, a strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values". Whether you agree with them politically or not, the Dirty Dozen list and the report that it is drawn from are, as the Washington Times said, "a heads-up for parents who may have no clue what their children are studying".

How Do I Join the RCNJ Mailing List?

Whether you are a long time member of the RCNJ Mailing List or someone looking to join the Mailing List for the first time, you must follow a new procedure to receive regular e-mail from us.

Click "Read More..." to get all the details.

Background

For over three years, I have been building an e-mail list for the RCNJ by hand. By this I mean that I would receive individual messages from people that said, "Would you please add me to the RCNJ Mailing List?" and accumlated the e-mail addresses on my e-mail client. Then, whenever we updated our Web Site, which was no more than once a month, I would summarize whatever the changes were and send out that summary as an e-mail message to the hundreds of people on the mailing list.

As you can imagine, this is both time consuming and error prone. So, we are attempting to improve the situation by automating the mailing list using a new feature of the RCNJ Web Site.

Join the Web Site and Receive Daily or Weekly E-mail Messages

Our new Web Site architecture allows you to:
  1. register as a user of the Web Site, and
  2. elect to receive story headlines automatically from the Web Site on a daily or weekly basis.
You will only receive an e-mail message if there is new information posted to the Web Site during the time period in question. So, particularly if you elect to receive the weekly headlines, the number of e-mails that you will receive is small, but you will still be able to stay up to date with what is happening at rcnj.org.

How to Register as a User of rcnj.org

The user registration process is simple. From any page on the Web Site, click the link marked user account. See the example below:

click on user_account

A new Web Page will be displayed. About half way down the page, fill out the section called "New User". This section asks for the following information:

  1. a user name that you choose
Feel free to choose a user name that reflects your personality, but please don't choose a user name that contains a profanity and any other word that does not reflect well on you or the RCNJ. Also, don't put any spaces or special characters in your user name.
  2. a valid e-mail address where the Web Site can send you mail
The Web Site is going to respond right away by sending you a password. So, enter an address here that you can access quickly. As you know, this e-mail address will not be used for SPAM.
This is what it looks like:

fill in the New User area

Once you are done typing your user name and e-mail address, click the newuser button.

Almost instantly, you will be sent an e-mail message that looks like this:

The user name 'amos' on http://www.rcnj.org has this email address
associated with it. A web user from TCP/IP address 63.77.34.11 has
just requested that amos's password be sent as a reminder. The password is 'WhateverItIs'.

Login to RCNJ
---------------

In order to login with this password, visit http://www.rcnj.org/cgi-bin/users.pl
and enter your user name and password.

Stay Up To Date
---------------

To get RCNJ Headlines mailed to you periodically at 3:00am Eastern
Time, visit http://www.rcnj.org/cgi-bin/users.pl?op=edituser and set the 'RCNJ Headlines'
option to 'Email Headlines Each Night' or 'Email Headlines Once Per Week'.
You must already be logged into your user account in order for this to work.

Questions?
----------

If you have any further questions, you should send an e-mail to webmaster@rcnj.org.

Logging Into rcnj.org

Once you have received the password, you must go back to the Users page and login. Type your User Name and new Password into the fields below the "Login" title bar. Once you have done this, click userlogin.

Modify Your Preferences

Next click the Preferences link on the User Menubar.

click on the Preferences link

Find the area of the Preferences screen marked "RCNJ Mailing List {this will send you mail}". Join one of the mailing lists by choosing either "Email Headlines Each Night" or "Email Headlines Once Per Week" from the pop-up menu.

RCNJ Rolls Out Major Web Site Upgrade

Dave Aiello wrote, "On behalf of the management committee of the Rensselaer Club of New Jersey, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we have successfully relaunched our Web Site. The New RCNJ Web Site reprensents a revolutionary change in the way we will communicate with our members and the rest of the Rensselaer community."

"We launched rcnj.org in 1997. Many of you know that it was the first Web Site operated by a Rensselaer regional alumni chapter. For the past three years, it has been a very simple Web Site with relatively few pages, maintained by one member of our organization."

"The new Web Site architecture eliminates nearly all of the shortcomings of our previous efforts. We can now easily support contributions from many club members. The new Web Site allows users to register and request that headlines from recently posted stories be sent to them by e-mail. The database behind the Web Site provides state-of-the-art categorization and search capabilities."

Dave Aiello continues,"There is little doubt that we will succeed in increasing the amount of information posted to rcnj.org. We are also quite likely to improve the currency (timeliness) of the information found here. But the real goal of making these changes is to expand the number of active members in our chapter by creating a virtual community."

"I want to thank the members of the RCNJ Management Committee who have supported this effort from the outset:"

  • Dave Bressen
  • John Cloninger
  • Howard Deutsch
  • Howard Isermann
  • John Kiesewetter
  • Phil Lurie
  • Rob Mauriello
  • Joe Morein
  • Sandeep Nandy
  • Joe Pilaro
  • David Plaut
  • Richard Shive
  • Dean Wellington

"Please let us know if you have any comments or questions about the new Web Site. An excellent way to provide this feedback is to submit a comment to this story."

Why Are Some Stories Dated Prior to September 2000?

Although the RCNJ Web Site was relaunched at the beginning of September 2000, we are reposting historical content from rcnj.org so that it will not disappear forever. These articles will carry their original posting dates, not the dates when they were copied on to the new Web Site.

We will begin the historical preservation project with stories from the Year 2000. We plan to post as much of the original content of this Web Site as possible, including any and all available stories from 1999, 1998, and 1997, the year this Web Site began.
