Football Beats St. John Fisher

Rensselaer beat St. John Fisher 35-19 on Saturday to break a three game losing streak. This brings RPI's record to 2-5 for the season. St. John Fisher made it close when they capitalized on a third quarter RPI fumble to close the gap to 21-19. However, RPI came back with two touchdowns to close out the scoring.

RPI Whitewashes Army

Nathan Marsters made 15 saves en route to a 3-0 shut out of Army on Saturday night at the Field House. Eric Cavosie (Marc's younger brother) scored his first career goal to break a 0-0 tie in the second period.

Tim Wilkin's article in the Times-Union says that Dan Fridgen was disappointed with RPI's play in the first period. But, the Engineers responded with 22 second period shots on goal to put some distance between the teams.

Venture Forum Presents Business Plan Contest Kickoff on November 2

Tom Payne '86 let us know that the Rensselaer Entrepreneur Network is holding a Venture Forum meeting on November 2 at the New York Athletic Club. One of the purposes of this meeting is to kickoff the "Open" Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship. We are adding this event to the RCNJ Event Calendar. Read on for more details....

It's somewhat difficult to summarize the many purposes of this event. As we mentioned above, it introduces the Sixth Annual Open Business Plan Competition that is sponsored by Rensselaer. Another purpose is to bring representatives from several Incubator Center companies to New York so that they can present a summary of their work.

Perhaps the greatest purpose of this meeting is to begin a series of quarterly networking opportunities for entrepreneurs, "angel" investors, venture capitalists, and professionals providing services to these groups.

RPI Hockey Loses to UMass-Lowell 4-3

The RPI Men's hockey team lost to UMass-Lowell 4-3 Friday night in the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA. "I didn't think we did the little things well," says head coach Dan Fridgen in the USCHO recap.

Having attended the game, I was disappointed in the fan turnout at Tsongas. The box score reports an attendance of around 1500, although in a 6,500 seat arena, it felt more like 900. There really is nothing like a game at the Houston Field House!

Another Frustrating Saturday at 86 Field

Dave Aiello wrote, "I've been building a Linux machine this week, so forgive the lack of preview information on this week's football game. I did not have a chance to watch or listen to the game between Rensselaer and Hartwick today, so it's hard to be critical. But the statistics give the unmistakeable impression that this was an ugly loss for the Engineers."

D3football.com reports that RPI turned the ball over 6 times enroute to a 20-13 loss.

Rensselaer lead 13-12 at the half, but Hartwick rallied with a touchdown plus a two point conversion to put the game out of reach.

RPI Surprises BU, 5-4

Not all the sports news was bad for Rensselaer on Saturday. The Men's Hockey Team traveled to Boston University and won the game 5-4. Marc Cavosie scored three goals and one assist, and 6'4" freshman goaltender Nathan Marsters made 32 saves to lead RPI to victory.

Tim Wilkin's report in the Times-Union said, "To some, this score might raise an eyebrow or two. BU was ranked
sixth in the country and was picked as the second-best team in
always-tough Hockey East. BU didn't lose a game at home last
year, going 14-0-3."

Other reports on the game:

Union Beats RPI for the Dutchman's Shoes

In a turnover filled game, Union scored last. Brian Slekes caught a pass in the back of the RPI end zone with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter to beat Rensselaer 27-23.

The Times-Union reports that, "The Dutchmen appeared to have botched what looked like a sure victory by turning the ball over four times in the second half. Three
interceptions and a fumble by Union enabled the Engineers to hang
close despite being outplayed statistically."

It would have been great if RPI could have caught enough of a break to win. Instead they slip to 1-4.

Another account of the game is provided by the Schenectady Gazette: "The battle for the Dutchman's Shoes Trophy was won by a strong arm, a pair of soft hands and a few iron stomachs.... Down by three points with 2:27 left, Union marched 89 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 22-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Ben Gilbert to senior
split end Bryan Slekes with 10 seconds remaining, to defeat Rensselaer, 27-23, Saturday at Frank Bailey Field."

LSC Internship 2001 Sponsorship Brochure

Here is the Rensselaer / Liberty Science Center Internship Program Brochure for 2001. The purpose of this document is to support requests for funding from corporations and non-profit organizations. It is also useful because it provides a brief overview of the Internship Program, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Liberty Science Center.

If you would like to help fund the Internship Program for the Summer of 2001, please contact Phil Lurie or Dave Aiello.

This is an Adobe Acrobat document. Most personal computers already have the Adobe Acrobat reader installed on them. However, if your computer does not, visit Adobe's Web Site and download the Acrobat reader. There is no charge, but registration is required.

Finally, please note that the final printed on a single double-sided sheet and tri-folded. The brochure makes a lot more sense if you assemble it in that manner.

RPI Battles Union Saturday for the Shoes

Dave Aiello wrote, "If I could be in the Capital District this weekend, I'd be in Schenectady to see RPI play Union for the Dutchman's Shoes. What else needs to be said?"

Well, Fran Elia wrote a great column about the rivalry and the context in which the game will be played this season. Basically, RPI needs this win to salvage some pride in a season where they've lost some games that were automatic wins during the last two years. Union, on the other hand, is performing the way RPI did last season.

Read on for broadcast details.

The RPI-Union football game is at Union beginning at 1:00pm, Eastern Time. It happens to be the D3football.com Broadcast Game of the Week. So, you can listen through their feed or WRPI (see below).

The game will be Webcast on WRPI in RealAudio format. If you need more information on listening to WRPI over the Internet, check out WRPI's RealAudio FAQ.

RPI Opens Hockey Season at BU

The Rensselaer Men's Hockey Team travels to Boston University for the season opener. Faceoff will be at 7:00pm Eastern Time. The game will be Webcast on WRPI in RealAudio format.

The US College Hockey ECAC Preview article talks about this game and the other non-league games that ECAC Division I teams are playing this weekend. It quotes Dan Fridgen, head coach of the Engineers as saying, "This will be a teaching year."

If you need more information on listening to WRPI over the Internet, check out WRPI's RealAudio FAQ.

Tahira Reid Interviewed on NPR

Campus.News reported that Tahira Reid '00 was interviewed on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition radio program. Reid is from the Bronx and invented the Dutch 2000 automatic double dutch rope-turning machine.

The Campus.News article includes links to a RealAudio clip of the NPR interview.

The NPR interview is similar to an interview that she did on NBC's Today Show several weeks ago. The main difference is that NPR has made the interview available on its Web Site, while NBC has not chosen to retain her appearance in its Web Site archives.

Satellite Hockey 2001 is a GO!

jpcloninger96 writes,"There had been some internal question as to whether Troy would broadcast a game this year. The issue centered around the transmission method to the remote sites."

Peter Pedone from the alumni house informs us:

I am writing with the GREAT news that Satellite Hockey 2001 is a GO!!!!

The telecast will originate from Clarkson's Cheel Arena, in lovely Potsdam, New York, on Saturday, February 10, 2001. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. (EST) with pre-game beginning at 6:45 p.m.

We will continue to use the C-Band transmission, at least for one more year. We have thoroughly investigated the smaller, non-steerable KU-band satellite receivers and unless we pay to be listed in a subscribed sports package (and chances are that there would be an NHL game on a Saturday night, so we would be bumped from transmission), there are few options. We have not given up and are still investigating options, but for 2001, we are retaining the C-Band technology.

ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll Predicts RPI Will Finish Fifth

The Albany Times-Union reported that the ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll has been released and Rensselaer is ranked fifth out of 12 teams.

Junior forward Matt Murley, a native of Troy, is quoted as saying, "I know we are going to be a good team. When you are ranked high in the poll, there are a lot of
teams that will really gun for you. We're in the middle of
the pack ... and we are going to surprise some people."

The first game of the season is October 14 at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena.

Barton Hall, Student Union, and George Rickey Sculpture Dedicated

Over the past few weeks, many people on campus have been busy even if their only job was to attend the dedication of campus improvements. Campus.News reported that Barton Hall, the renovated Student Union, and a sculpture by George Rickey were dedicated in the same week.

Barton Hall is the first new residence hall at Rensselaer in many years, and it has the kind of amenities for collaborative work that are normally only present at hotels and conference centers. The dormitory was favorably mentioned in
Time/Princeton Review's "The Best College for You in 2001"
.

The Student Union has also been extensively renovated. Much of the work depicted on the Campus Planning Web Site were completed prior to the dedication.

Many of the people who attended Alumni Weekend and the Patroon Dinner were able to take part in these dedications.

Open Source Web Site Discusses RCNJ.org

The Rensselaer Club of New Jersey Web Site was discussed on a Web Site that is popular with members of an Open Source development community. The Web Site, Slashcode.com, is the official Web Site of the Slashcode project. The programs that are used to manage RCNJ.org are derived from an older version of the Slashcode code base.

This is important because information from the Slashcode Web Site is syndicated to other Web Sites that are popular within the Linux developer community. We have often found in the past that there are software developers in the Metropolitan New York and Delaware Valley areas that are RPI graduates and do not know that RCNJ.org exists. Getting stories posted to other Web Sites is one way to reach that group.

Using RCNJ.org as a tool for building the alumni community in this region is one of our biggest goals. If you have any suggestions about other ways to spread the word about this site, please submit a comment for inclusion with this story.
