How Do I Locate a City if I Don't Know the Area?

On the Life in New Jersey section page, we have links to every government, highway, and transit site that we could find. But, we didn't really have a way to help people find a city or town in our area. This is helpful if someone offers you a job in Parsippany and you don't know where it is. A lot of times, the person you are speaking with will tell you, but they don't show you a map and point out neighboring towns.

The fastest way I have found to locate lots of local information is to use Yahoo! GetLocal. It's a nice service that lists all of the cities and towns in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Once you find the city you are looking for, click on the "Maps" link in the middle of the page (it's small, but it seems to be there on every page). That gives you an on-line map of the area in and around the city.

Using Local Newspapers to Find Apartments

Dave Aiello writes, "My fiancee and I are getting married in July, so we are in the process of looking for an apartment or a condo in Central New Jersey. This is the first place where we will live together. I thought I might share the research experience, in case it might benefit other alumni."

"A couple of weeks ago, I went through the process of identifying newspaper-related Web Sites in New Jersey. This was helpful because it gave us an idea of places where Real Estate ads would be run. One thing we noticed fairly quickly was that the 'dead trees version' of the newspaper is often a better source of current real estate ads than the Web Site, even when the Web Site purports to carry Classifieds. This was certainly the case with The Princeton Packet."

"Don't rule out the weeklies and bi-weeklies. The Princeton Packet is a great source of leads on rentals from New Hope, Pennsylvania (slightly NW of Trenton), east to Hightstown, NJ (the town where New Jersey Turnpike Exit 8 is located). This is the resource we are using almost exclusively."

"If anyone has any questions about searching for rental housing in the Princeton or Morristown areas (where I am moving and where I currently live), please email me at dave_aiello@ctdata.com and I will try to assist you."

Nominating Committee Preparing for June Elections

PhilLurie writes, "At the April 17th RCNJ Board Meeting in Morris Plains, I volunteered to lead the 2001-2002 nominating committee. Teleconferences will be held over the next few weeks to indentify candidates to serve as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Committee Chairs."

"The RCNJ Constitution calls for elections to be held at least every three years. The Board has asked that the nominating committee make recommendations about the structure of the group and the length of the terms for new officers. This Web Site will be used to host the election itself, which is planned for late June. Hopefully, a newsletter to the entire NJ alumni community will be distributed in early June containg the slate and proposed changes."

Anyone interested in paticipating in this process should feel free to send Phil an email at phil-lurie@att.net.

Student-Founded Company Receives $250k in Venture Funding

Campus.News is reporting that Incubator tenant ProductivityNet received $250,000 in seed funding from iDeal Partners an Albany-based investor group. According to the article, this is the largest amount of venture capital raised by a student-run company in history.

First news of this investment broke in the Albany Times Union about ten days ago. The Times Union article points out that ProductivityNet won the student category of the Rensselaer-Lucent Business Plan Contest last year.

iDeal Partners is led by John Cavalier, MapInfo's co-chairman. MapInfo is a firm that has been associated with RPI since its founding by another group of Rensselaer students in 1986.

Ed Anuff: Leading the Way at Epicentric

Dave Aiello wrote, "One of my best friends from my days in Troy is Ed Anuff '90. We have worked together on a number of ventures since we graduated. Ed has achieved business success on a large scale. He founded Epicentric, a venture captial-backed software company that helps Fortune 100 companies build portal web sites and extranets. He now holds the titles of Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer."

"I have been looking for a news article in a major publication about his company, because I know that they have made a number of large sales in the Financial Services business. So, I was glad to find that the Wednesday edition of Red Herring's Catch of the Day is about Epicentric and its successful fourth round of venture capital funding. The article talks primarily about Epicentric's CEO Michael Crosno. But, anyone who has followed the company for a long time knows that management depth and lack of turnover at the top are among Epicentric's greatest strengths."

"RPI has not paid close enough attention to what Ed has done since he graduated. His achievements warrant study in Management and IT classes. The RCNJ recognizes his accomplishments, and we hope that one day Epicentric will be a household name."

An Interview With Alain St. Hilaire

Friday night, the Trenton Titans defeated the Toledo Storm 6-1 at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ. John Cloninger was on hand to watch the game along with Dave Nangle '94. They interviewed former RPI center Alain St. Hilaire '99 who had two assists and earned the game’s second star.

The Titans will be the first seed in the Northern Conference as they enter the ECHL Playoffs. They open the postseason at home on Saturday against the Johnstown Chiefs.

To read the interview, click "Read More..."

John Cloninger: Congratulations on your win tonight and earning the second star of the game. You guys put them away early!

Alain St. Hilaire: Thanks!

Cloninger: What made you decide to go to RPI?

St. Hilaire: Probably the combination of great academics, and a great hockey program. There were other schools I was interested in, but they didn’t have that blend of a high level of education and play a high level of hockey—a place that has a great tradition. So that’s probably the mix that attracted me to RPI in the first place. And plus that it was three hours and a half from home, from Montreal, and I had been playing juniors out west in Saskatchewan for three years so I hadn’t seen my parents much, so it was a lot easier for my parents to come to the games.

Cloninger: It’s kind of funny that the ECAC takes all the digs for not being as good as the CCHA or Hockey East because of the academic standards.

St. Hilaire: It’s a give and take. If you want to go for the big hockey school, sometimes they don’t have the best education. It’s what you want out of life after hockey too, especially if you’re not going to the NHL.

Cloninger: Let’s hope it’s not anytime soon, but once you are done with hockey, what are you looking to do?

St. Hilaire: I’m looking to get a job with a financial company, a brokerage company. I’m actually giving my time, one afternoon a week after practice, at a company in Princeton called Hamilton and Company. It’s a financial company; I’m just getting a little bit of experience, as much as I can one day a week; that’s all the time I have to give to them…so after that hopefully I’ll have that internship on my resume and it’ll be easier to get a starting position with a financial firm.

Cloninger: Scott Bertoli [who played at Princeton while Alain was at RPI] is one of your teammates. Do you keep in touch with your RPI teammates or ECAC players from your time?

St. Hilaire: Not so much with the guys that are there right now, but with the guys that I played with like Mark Murphy, George Murray, who were my classmates. And Pete Gardiner and Doug Shepherd who were a class behind me but they were my roommates for two years. Those four guys are pretty much the guys I keep in touch with.

Cloninger: Where are they now?

(Dave Nangle interjects: "Well Pat Brownlee’s in Amarillo. Bill ran into him last week." We all laughed. Bill Ruhsam '96 is a friend of ours who works part time for the Lubbock Cotton Kings and bumped into Pat when Lubbock was playing Amarillo. I later found out that Pat Brownlee actually plays in Lubbock and Doug Shepherd plays in Amarillo)

St. Hilaire: I just talked to him a couple days ago. His season’s over; it ended Sunday and they didn’t make the playoffs. Mark Murphy’s an All-Star in the AHL this year with Portland. George Murray is farming in Alberta. He went to a pro camp last year right out of college and got a real severe concussion, and it scared him. He had headaches for months; he just said forget it. He was only going to doing it for one or two years anyway. His objective was to go back and farm. And Pete Gardiner I play against in this league; he plays for Roanoke. He signed with the Minnesota Wild this summer, but they sent him down.

Cloninger: Who is the most talented person you played against during your RPI career?

St. Hilaire: There’s been a few good players through that league. My first couple of years it was that Martin St. Louis from Vermont and Jeff Halpern was always strong at Princeton. Jeff Hamilton at Yale, who is just graduating.

Cloninger: He’s a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award this year.

St. Hilaire: Guys like that.

Cloninger: What did the guys do for your birthday (last Wednesday night)?

St. Hilaire: We got home Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock [AM] and we were just tired from that road trip, so I just slept a lot.

Cloninger: Where was your Tuesday game?

St. Hilaire: In Charlotte, NC. We got home at eight-thirty in the morning. It wears you out. We had to rest up for the weekend, so I just went to dinner with my girlfriend.

Cloninger: Well I will let you go. Good luck in the playoffs!

St. Hilaire: Thank you.

John Cloninger would like to extend thanks on behalf of RCNJ to the Trenton Titans, Alain St. Hilaire, and Joe Zydlo, the Titans director of Public Relations.

Mike Steele '95/'97 also contributed to this interview.

New Jersey Newspaper and TV-Related Web Sites

In the last few years, a couple of consortia of newspapers in New Jersey have put together excellent Web Sites that focus exclusively on New Jersey. Recently, a couple of broadcast television and cable systems have jumped into the fray as well. All of these sites provide local and statewide news and information in greater depth than has been available previously.

Read on for a list of the most useful....

By far the largest site in this category is NJ.com, also known as New Jersey Online. The news for this Web Site is drawn from:

  • The Star-Ledger, the largest newspaper in New Jersey
  • The Jersey Journal, based in Jersey City
  • The Express-Times, actually located in Easton, PA, right over the border from Northwest New Jersey
  • The Gloucester Times, from Woodbury, near Philadelphia
  • The Bridgeton News, from a small city from Salem County, near Delaware
  • Today's Sunbeam, from Salem, also near Delaware

The Gannett Newspapers in New Jersey have a competing offering, InJersey.com. The papers involved in this Web Site place information on InJersey.com, but also have information on their own Web Sites. The papers involved are:

Packet Online, an excellent Web Site about the Princeton area, is located at www.pacpub.com. The flagship newspaper on this site is The Princeton Packet a bi-weekly which has been published since 1786. The other papers involved are small local papers that are mostly weekly publications, including:

  • The Beacon
  • The Cranbury Press
  • Hillsborough Beacon
  • Hopewell Valley News
  • The Lawrence Ledger
  • The Manville News
  • The Messenger-Press
  • Register-News
  • South Brunswick Post
  • Windsor-Heights Herald

SouthJersey.com is not produced by newspapers. It is produced by GPI Media and WPVI TV (Channel 6 in Philadelphia). It has good local information, including entertainment and dining. It also has a lot of information about the "Jersey Shore", the Atlantic coast area of the State.

In the Cablevision territories (most of the northern part of NJ), a channel called News 12 provides local and regional news and information. However, their Web Site is as available to everyone throughout the state. They have a pretty good Web Site, but they focus on streaming video and their cross-platform support (i.e. support for non-Microsoft products) seems to be limited.

Comcast (the cable company in most of the southern part of New Jersey) has a TV station called CN8. Their Web Site is less useful than News 12 and has very little news and local information.

How do you access the Life in New Jersey section of RCNJ.org?
