RCNJ Phonathon Needs More Volunteers, Why Not Join Us?

JZoeller told us that ten alumni have already volunteered to participate in the RCNJ Phonathon, scheduled for Tuesday, October 2. Ten volunteers may seem like a lot, considering that the event is more than a month away. But, this only represents an increase of two people over last year's all-time low of eight callers.

We are trying to substantially improve our performance over last year, and return to the number of volunteers and the amount of money raised that we achieved in 1999. One way to do this is to find a few more volunteers. If we reach 12 volunteers, only 2 more than we have today, we will have achieved a 50 percent increase in the number of participants. With your help, we can reach this milestone.

Sandeep Nandy '94 and John Zoeller '62 are co-chairing the event and invite you to join the 10 other alumni who have already volunteered. John can be reached at 732-605-1174 or by e-mail at jzoeller@home.com. Please contact John, ASAP, if you can help. Sandeep is currently out of the country, but will be back in time for the Phonathon.

Trenton Titans Resign St. Hilaire

Joe Pilaro pointed out that The Trenton Times is reporting that The Trenton Titans have resigned Alain St. Hilaire '99. The Titans are members of the East Coast Hockey League. According to the article, "St. Hilaire ranked third on the team in scoring with 50 points in 56 games last season, then had a strong
postseason with seven goals and 11 points in 19 playoff games."

Flashback: John Cloninger interviewed Alain last spring and we published the article here on RCNJ.org.

Memorial Service for Marvin Ramer '40 in NYC on September 9

Bob Wells '40 forwarded the following email message from Joan Ramer to us:

I am sorry to inform you that my father, Marvin M. Ramer, passed away on July 18, 2001, of cardiac arrest. Marvin retired as vice chairman of the Lummis Company and was very active in RPI Alumni Affairs. We will be holding a memorial service for him at the UN Chapel in NYC, 777 UN Plaza (First Avenue at 44th Street) on September 9 at 1:00pm. I would greatly appreciate your informing other classmates.

Obviously, the RCNJ would like to express its condolences to Marvin's family and friends. Read on for a couple of comments from Bob Wells about the importance of staying in touch with alumni in failing health, and an editorial comment about the posting of bad news....

In the message he sent on August 9, Bob Wells included the following postscript:

We included a note from {Marvin Ramer's} wife Stella in our Alumni News of March 2001 suggesting that he would like to hear from class mates at his Boca address. I hope others realized how important those notes can be, and shouldn't be postponed.

Upon posting this article, Dave Aiello wrote:

RCNJ.org is, first and foremost, a forum for Rensselaer alumni news. We post the good and bad news in the hope that it helps us all to participate more fully in the support of Rensselaer and the lives of our friends and fellow alumni.

We would have been pleased to carry the note from Bob Wells that encouraged people to write to Marvin Ramer when he wrote it last year. If you have a piece of news or an announcement that you think alumni in New Jersey, the New York Metropolitan Area, or the Delaware Valley would be interested in, please submit it to our Web Site at http://www.rcnj.org/cgi-bin/submit.pl. That's the "Submit Story" link on the RCNJ.org home page.

Regarding the posting of bad news such as a death notice, we will not publish such information without confirmation either through a newspaper, Rensselaer Alumni Relations, or a credible third party. We won't publish the fact that someone died solely on the basis of an email we receive from someone who has never communicated with us before.

The reason that we did not publish this story earlier is because we could not find anyone at Rensselaer who could confirm it. Perhaps it would have been sufficient to re-contact Bob Wells directly, but we did not think to do that.

Fall College Fairs

JFPilaro writes, "It's that time of year again! Rensselaer Admissions has posted the list of Fall College Fairs in New Jersey where RPI would like to have a presence. I have attached a list for you to use to select those fairs compatible with your schedules.

Please e-mail me at BraeMGB@aol.com or telephone at [609] 700-0649 by September 3 so that I may inform Admissions about which fairs RCNJ will handle. Last year we covered all the fairs which Admissions could no cover with their own staff. Let's keep up the great effort of the New Jersey Alumni Volunteers."

Admissions Provides Details of Class of '05, Student Life Changes

Joe Pilaro writes, "Some interesting statistics on this fall's incoming class. There are 1147 enrolling freshmen: that represents the largest class applying to Rensselaer since 1986. Two hundred ninety-three (293) are women, 84 are minority students, 48 are legacies, and 204 are Rensselaer Medal recipients. The average SAT score is 1305."

"Also, beginning in the fall of 2002, first-year students will not be allowed to bring cars to campus. The reasoning for the decision is that the first-year experience is such an important part of the student's connection to Rensselaer and to his/her classmates, that we want to incentivize students to spend as much time as possible around the campus and among its people. This was the reason given in 1951, my freshman year!"

"We will be calling for Admissions Volunteers in August for the Fall 2001 series of College Fairs to be held at New Jersey High Schools during September and October. If you've relocated, have a new job, etc., please forward all new information to Gloria Pappas in the Admissions Office at pappag@rpi.edu and to JF Pilaro at BRAEmgb@aol.com. Thanks and have a great summer!"

RCNJ Phonathon Seeks Volunteers

SKNandy writes, "As co-chair of the 2001 RCNJ Phonathon, now is the time to ask for the help of all members of the RCNJ.

The 2001 RCNJ Phonathon will be taking place on October 2, 2001 at same site as previous years, Langan Engineering in Elmwood Park. The event time is scheduled for 6-9 pm, with dinner and training provided around 5:30 pm.

I have heard from some of you as to whether you can attend. If you have not spoken to me, please contact me and let me know if you can attend. "

Admissions Volunteers On-campus Training

Joe Pilaro writes, "Our ability to attract and maintain high-quality students to Rensselaer is due, in large part, to the incredible job done by our Rensselaer Alumni Admissions Volunteers. In an effort to provide our volunteers with the most up-to-date information and news about Rensselaer, we are scheduling the Alumni Admissions Volunteer Training Session III to be held Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15, 2001. The schedule for this event is as follows:"

  • DAY I FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2001

    • 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. lunch and training session
    • 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dinner

  • DAY II SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2001

    • 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Rensselaer Medal Reception (on campus)

"As the Regional Manager or Alumni Admissions Volunteer from New Jersey, I can arrange for your attendance at this event. I also encourage you to identify and ask a new alumnus/na volunteer from our region to join us for these exciting and informative days. Read on for more details...."

"I can nominate two active volunteers from our region who are interested in partnering with the Admissions staff in our endeavors to attract the best and brightest students to Rensselaer. And, this event will be held at no cost to you."

"Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Please forward the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of the candidates to me at braemgb@aol.com, ASAP. More details and information will follow."

Dave Aiello Got Married and Moved to Lawrenceville

Dave Aiello wrote, "For those of you who did not know, Kathleen Kuykendall and I got married on July 7 in Philadelphia. (She is now Kathleen Aiello.) We spent three weeks in France and Italy after that, which is one reason why the activity level on RCNJ.org has not been very high."

"Kathleen and I moved to Lawrenceville, NJ, near Princeton. For those of you who may need to get in touch with me by telephone, my new work phone number is 609-844-1200, Extension 101. My home phone number is 609-844-1230. If you need my address, please send me an email."

New Jersey Devils Game Date Set

Sandeep Nandy '94 informs me that the RCNJ has decided to attend a New Jersey Devils game at the Continental Airlines Arena. The game is on December 8, 2001 at 1:00 PM against the Washington Capitals.

Of interest to our alumni is that Adam Oates (who played three seasons at RPI and later completed his degree) is expected to play in the game. We are working on arranging for him to meet us before the game.

If you are interested in attending this event, please contact Sandeep Nandy '94.
