RCNJ.org and RPIentrepreneur.com Exchange Headlines

Dave Aiello wrote, "Yesterday, Tom Payne '86 and I set up an automatic headline exchange between The Rensselaer Club of New Jersey and Rensselaer Entrepreneur Network Web Sites. On the right side of our home page, you will now see a box labeled 'Rensselaer Entrepreneur Network' which contains the current headlines from their Web Site. They have the same arrangement for RCNJ.org headlines on the right side of their home page."

"This is another milestone for Rensselaer alumni news sites. Never before have two alumni-related sites shared headlines with each other. We hope to establish many similar relationships with other RPI-related Web Sites in the future."

"We think that displaying the headlines from REN is a great service to RCNJ.org readers. This service provides you with quick access to the latest news from one of our afiliate groups. It also helps promote other Rensselaer-related events in the Metropolitan New York area. Please let us know if you find this service useful."

Rensselaer Entrepreneur Network Updates Its Web Site

The Rensselaer Entrpreneur Network, a group of RPI alumni who are interested in entrepreneurship and new business ventures, has relaunched their Web Site at www.RPIentrepreneur.com. The REN Web Site is quite similar in functionality to RCNJ.org and it has been put together by Tom Payne '86.

REN is one of the affinity groups started by Alumni Relations and the RAA. These groups are designed to bring alumni from throughout the country together based on their business or community interests, not on their geographic location.

The Entrepreneur Network's next meeting is another event in their Venture Forum series. It will be held Wednesday, November 28 at The New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.

Two RPI Seniors Risk Lives to Save Neighbor

Last week, Terrence Brown reported in The Poly that RPI Seniors Zach Ashwell and Ian Blanch pulled a man out of a burning College Avenue building. The man they rescued, William R. Halloran, Sr., 55, later died of his injuries at Westchester Burn Center. Halloran was transported to Westchester after initially being treated at Samaritan Hospital.

RPI Dominates Iona 3-1

Over on USCHO, Jayson Moy reports that RPI scored two unanswered goals in the third period to cruise to an easy 3-1 victory over Iona College. The score is perhaps not indicative of the way Rensselaer dominated the game: the Engineers outshot the Gaels 48-26.

Freshman Nick Economakos put the game away for RPI with his first collegiate goal. He also pitched in with an assist. Ryan Shields scored the first goal of the game for the Engineers. Marc Cavosie scored the game winner. After giving up a goal at 8:02 of the first period, Nathan Marsters made it look easy by making 25 saves en route to the win.

D3football.com reports that Ithaca College beat RPI 27-10 at '86 Field. After the Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Matt Verenini field goal, Ithaca scored 21 unanswered points to put the game away. Dan Cole was 14-for-32 passing for 206 yards. Marc Blevins had 16 tackles and an interception.

Three New Area Codes to be Added for Northern and Central New Jersey

Verizon has announced that it will introduce three new area codes in New Jersey on December 1. This means that it will add a second area code in each of the existing 201, 973, and 732 areas. Also, telephone users in those areas will begin having to dial 10 digits for all telephone calls at that time.

We are pointing this out here as a service to our members and to our friends on campus who travel to New Jersey regularly. Be prepared or be confused.

Haviland's Presentation at RCNJ Fall Dinner Focuses on New Campus Facilities

David HavilandDave Aiello wrote, "Last night, the RCNJ held its Fall Dinner Meeting for 2001. Rensselaer's Vice President for Institutional Advancement, David Haviland '64, gave an entertaining presentation on the progress that has been made toward fulfilling the Rensselaer Plan to date."

"Much of Haviland's talk focused on the new campus facilities that RPI plans to erect on the Troy campus, including the Electronic Media and Performing Arts Center, the Biotechnology Research Center, and a 500 car parking garage on College Avenue."

"The RCNJ Fall Dinner at the Grand Summit Hotel in Summit was the largest event of its kind ever held in New Jersey. Representatives of the Rensselaer Alumni Chapters of New York City and Westchester and Rockland County also attended."

"This photograph of David Haviland was taken by John Cloninger '96. We have a number of other good photographs of the event which we plan to post as we have time, so stay tuned."

In Memory of J. Nicholas Humber '63, Killed on September 11

About a week after the terrorist attacks, we reported that Rensselaer had learned of the death of J. Nicholas Humber '63 on American Airlines Flight 11, one of the hijacked flights that crashed into the World Trade Center. Last week, Campus.News published an obituary for Mr. Humber that provides information on his business career, his achievements as a student at Renssealer, and his relationship with his fraternity brothers.

RPI Rolling Out New Web Functionality Across Many Web Sites

In case you hadn't noticed, Rensselaer Marketing and Media Relations has been aggressively rolling out new designs for many of RPI's Core Web Sites. Examples include: RPI.edu, AlumServ, and Campus.News. These sites are greatly improved, and we congratulate the staff of Marketing and Media Relations for a job well done.

Of particular interest to RCNJ members is the fact that the redesigned AlumServ Web Site provides eliminates some of the more troubling problems with finding out about our activities. Now, it's possible to get from the AlumServ home page to the RCNJ home page in only three clicks (starting from AlumServ: click on the Stay Involved -> Regional Chapters -> RCNJ.org).

Also, Alumni Relations has eliminated the page they used to maintain that duplicated some of the content on RCNJ.org. Thank you to Dave Bohan and the staff of Alumni Relations for making this change that we have requested for over a year.

RPI Outlasts Mercyhurst, 4-3

At the Field House on Saturday night, Rensselaer scored three goals in a 3:32 span of the first period, and held on to beat Mercyhurst 4-3. The Engineers capitalized on three power play situations with goals by Carson Butterwick, Danny Eberly, and Nolan Graham. The other goal was scored by Chris Migliore. Sophomore Nathan Marsters turned back 33 Mercyhurst shots for the victory.

The victory over Mercyhurst brings RPI's overall record to 3-4. Next Saturday night, RPI will face another MAAC opponent, the Iona College Gaels at 7:00pm ET in Troy.

Men's Hockey Splits with Colgate and Cornell

Last Friday, RPI opened the ECAC regular season with a 2-1 road victory over Colgate. Matt Murley and Nolan Graham scored for the Engineers. Sophomore Kevin Kurk made 28 saves in the game, 12 in the third period alone. The next night in Ithaca, streaking Cornell was too much for RPI, winning by a 4-1 score. Nolan Graham scored the only goal of the night for the visitors. Cornell is on a 4 game winning streak to start the season.

This weekend, RPI returns home to meet MAAC conference member Mercyhurst. Last year, RPI beat the Lakers 5-0. The game is Saturday night, 7:00pm, at Houston Field House. As usual, the game will be heard on WRPI, and you can listen from wherever you have an Internet connection, via RealAudio.

RPI Football Earns UCAA Bye, Stuns Hobart in 35-29 Win!

The Engineers came into Saturday's game with Hobart, one win away from a perfect 8-0 regular season. While listening to Saturday's broadcast, it felt like the dream of an undefeated regular season was just that. A dream.

The Engineers kept pace with Hobart throughout the game, but did not earn their first lead until a stunning play late in the 4th quarter. RPI worked their way down the field in the waning minutes. With 1:52 remaining in regulation, RPI was down 29-27. While attempting a 31-yard field goal, Hobart blocked the attempt, which was then recovered by holder Mike Defilippi. Defilippi ran the ball into the endzone for the touchdown, thus securing the Engineers' unbeaten season!

Buzz Gray's account of the event appears on the Times Union site

For the Division III playoff implications, and evidence of our first-round bye, click "Read More..."

Saturday's win earned us the #1 seed and the lone bye in the UCAA East bracket. RPI will face the winner of #6 Ithaca (9-1) at #4 Montclair State (9-1). The brackets appear here: (as posted on d3football.com). Good luck to the Engineers!

"Shallow Hal" Debuts: Another Film by Rensselaer Graduate Farrelly

Bobby Farrelly '81 is a producer of comedy movies. As the profile in September's Rensselaer Magazine explains, he and his brother Peter produced hits like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary.

This weekend, the Farrelly brothers' latest film debuts, Shallow Hal. This movie appears to have polarized reviewers to a level not often seen. In today's review in the New York Times, A.O. Scott writes, "Shallow Hal... is comparatively restrained when it comes to bodily effluvia and leering dirty jokes. The most shocking thing about it may be its unabashed sincerity. There are enough moments of demented comedy to make you aspirate your popcorn, but by the end you may find yourself, with some amazement, sniffing back tears."

On the other hand, Rita Kempley's

RPI Beats St. Lawrence 35-10 to Remain Undefeated

Dave Aiello wrote, "I've been a little busy for the past two weeks, so I let the article on the RPI-St. Lawrence football game slip until today. On November 4, RPI soundly defeated St. Lawrence 35-10 to raise its record to 7-0. According to D3football.com, the Engineers are now ranked 24th in the nation in Division 3."

"After St. Lawrence pulled to within 14-10 midway through the third quarter, RPI responded with 21 unanswered points. Kevin Siska led the offense with six receptions for 119 yards and a TD. The defense allowed zero yards rushing and registered 10 sacks."
